A teddy bear is a type of stuffed toy. They have been around for centuries and have delighted us since they were first introduced. To this day they are one of the most popular choices for gifts to children and loved ones for Valentine’s Day, birthdays and Christmas. These days this toy is available in a number of styles and designs. People can even dress up their bears in different outfits. Some people even collect the bears as a hobby.

The name for this toy comes from the name of former President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt. President Roosevelt was on a hunting trip when after a long chase attendants cornered, clubbed and tied a black bear. The president was then asked to shoot the bear but he refused. The incident was depicted by Clifford Berryman in a cartoon for the Washington Post. In the cartoon an adult black bear is tied up by a white handle and Roosevelt is turned away with disgust. In later cartoons that bear became smaller and cuter.
After seeing the cartoon, toy maker Morris Michtom decided to create a stuffed bear. He made a little stuffed bear and placed it in his shop window. The toy was accompanies with a sign that said Teddy’s Bear. The toy was an instant success and everyone wanted to have their own “Teddy’s Bear”. Ladies would carry the bears with them and the toy was a roaring success.

To this day children love to play with teddy bears. These days there are a number of factory made bears available in the market. If you are selecting this toy for a child make sure that it is of good quality because if the eyes or nose of the bear are not stitched on properly they could prove to be a choking hazard.

Teddy bears have delighted us for years. They are a great toy for children because they provide comfort and companionship. These days there are chains that allow you to make your own bear. There have been a number of books that have been written with a bear as the lead character. Winnie-the-pooh is one example of such books. There are even teddy bear museums. Emergency officials have recognized that giving a child a teddy bear in a crisis helps calm them down. Hence bears are distributed to police officers and fireman so that they can distribute them to children when there is an emergency.
